travel to china for approx 40 days - tourist visa requirement?

I am an Australian citizen and wish to travel to China in 2016 as a tourist.I plan to take an 8 day trip(tour) in Tibet from Lhasa to everest base camp return then to fly back to Beijing and then take a 21-26 day tour (with a tour company) and then spend 2-3 days in either Shanghai or Beijing at the end of the tour to wander around and be a tourist before flying home.In total i expect to spend about 35- 40 days in China. Can i get a tourist type for (say) 45 or 60 days?

Rod, it’s possible for you to get what you want. Usually, the stay duration of L type is 30 days or 60 days, while in real practice, few people get 60-day stay duration. If you get a 30-day one and enter PRC, you can apply for an extension before it expires.
Please note that when you apply for the tourist L type, remember not to mention that you will travel to Tibet, otherwise it’s very difficult for you to get it. After you get the L Type and enter PRC, you can find a qualified travel agency and ask it to apply for the Tibet travel permit for you, and then join a tour of the agency to visit Tibet. Individual tourist to Tibet is not accepted.
