About:China Customs Declaration

Will I have to pay duty on the engagement ring I bring in for my Chinese fiancée?

I have bought it in Australia and paid Australian Goods and Services Tax (GST, equivalent to VAT) on it (i.e., not claimed a GST refund) in the expectation that she will bring it back into Australia within 12 months. It would be really nice and fair if I can pay tax in only one jurisdiction. :)

Georgie, according to the rule, foreigners needn't pay tax for the items whose value doesn't exceed CNY 2000 if they plan to leave it in mainland. However, the fact is that many foreigners actually "broke the rule" but they were not fined or taxed. And your wife can bring it back to Australia without pay tax if she just wears it on.
