About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Aussie and Canadian arriving in Shanghai 4th via air and leave 7th via cruise ship.Is visa required?

We are travelling from Tokyo to Shanghai via air arriving approx. 4pm and boarding cruise ship on the 7th approx 12 midday.

Yes, you two should apply for tourist types in Japan because your route doesn't qualify for the 72 hours free transit.
