Visiting China during the Chinese New Year festival

Is it a good idea to avoid visiting during the New Year festivities? It sounds as though transport could be a problem. Will shops and attractions still be open as usual?

Mark, the attractions will be open as usual. So are these big department stores. But small restaurants and shops might be closed during the festival. If possible, you'd better avoid traveling during the festival.

Everywhere is empty. People are all with their family. Just like Christmas but much longer.
