About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hello, I had a question regarding transit and a visa.

We will be going from the USA-Beijing-Hong Kong, so no entry permit needed for our stop in Beijing for 2 days. On the way home our flight stops in Shanghai for one hour to connect and back to the USA. Does this mean we are not eligible for the 72 hour free transit since we stop in another city on the way back or is the trip home separate? Thank You

What is your return route, from HK-Shanghai-Beijing-USA? If so, you are disqualified because you stop by two Chinese cities.
