How to take a bus to the center of the nearest city

My daughters flight to New Zealand landed in Guangzhou for more than one day. They could not take a bus till nearest city because everywere it was written on chinese. Nobody in the airport was talking english. They had to stay on the airport the whole time. On their way back it is the same. Can you tell me what to do if they want to do something exept sleeping on the airport

use MTR, that is metro, everything is in english there. fast, easy and cheap. note that they have to keep their tkt to get out of MTR, should not throw it away after entering.
