We are planning go there from Nanjing stayed for 2 nights.
1. Is it better stay at top of mountain on first night?
2. I read city called Tangkou and Tunxi, what is the difference? Are they located on the down of mountain? Which one is the top of mountain? Is that we called yellow mountain?
3. How many hot springs are there? Are they at top of mountain?
Could you please advise best itinerary as well?

1. Yes, staying on the top of mountain is recommended. You will see the beautiful sunrise in the next morning.
2. These are two different places. Tangkou is at the mountain foot, much closer to the gate of scenic area. Tunxi Town is still about 40 miles (60 km) away.
3. I remember that there are about 15 hot springs. Most of them are located at halfway up the mountain and the mountain foot.
4. You are suggested to climb up from the back side first. Then visit Lion Peak, West Sea Scenic Area and other main attractions. BTW, there are cable cars available.

Beihai Hotel on the mountain top is recommended. It is clean with nice environment and facilities. Recently, it coasts about CNY 300 per room per night.
What do you mean by"must"? You don't need to book a hotel at Tangkou. There are many hotels there. If you want to stay one night there, you can book one upon arrival as it is not peak season recently and there should be rooms left.
The mountain has been developed into a scenic area, that's why it's called the scenic area by someone.
