About:China Family Reunion Visa

Attending a university program on a family reunion residence permit!

I'm having a family reunion residence permit (renewed 3 or 4 times already). Besides staying with my family (my Spouse is China National), I've now decided to study a one-year master program at one of the well-known universities here.
1. Is it ok to register as a student while I'm staying here as a family reunion? (changing my residence permit type is not an optimal option for me, if it doesn't matter I prefer to keep my status)
2. If I must change to a student residence permit, can I do it in PRC or should I exit the country once? (The school is in a different province than where my current residence permit is issued in)

Simon, if you want to attend the university, you had better change your status and apply for an X type and renew your residence permit. It's possible to change your status at the local exit and entry administration. You need to ask the office in your current residence address to issue you a transferring permit and then register in the province where the school is located.

Thanks Mark. Do you know what would be the possible consequences if I don't change my status to student?

Dear, if you don’t change it, I'm afraid you cannot attend the university program. The school may require you to change the status for the sake of management.
