Can I stay at airport waiting time until to 01/10/2016 morning 00:00 am, then leave the airport?

I have US passport to visit HONG KONG from San Francisco, stop at Shanghai. when I return to US,
I have a ticket that date is 01/09/2016 (20:20 ) from H.K to Shanghai (22:40). Because the ticket that from Shanghai to San Francisco is 01/13/2016 (14:20).
