You should apply for tourist L type. The following documents are required: the filled-out application form, a recently-taken bareheaded color photo, passport and copy of its data page, round trip air tickets, accommodation reservation as well as financial support proof and an invitation letter from an entity or an individual in PRC.
I personally think you’d better book a tour first. In this way, it will be easier for you to apply for L type.0
