hello, i'm planning to visit on Dec 31 - Jan 1. are the centers open for visitors these days? where would you recommend to stay during the 2 day stay?

Yes, it will be in operation still in the new year. For your two days stay, I suggest you live near the railway station, where you can find hotels in various standards. Or you can live near Tianfu Square, where you can have access to subway lines, line 1 and line 2, which is also near the city center, convenient for a city tour.
