Q2 visa to tourist L type

I am currently at the end of my Q2 type, with just a few days left. I want to stay one more month in Beijing, but I am missing one document in my application: my (Chinese) grandmother's hukou. When I applied for the same Q2 in my home country of Australia, I only needed her shenfenzhen Chinese ID card and a letter of invitation, plus all the usual passport requirements. I tried to renew it in Beijing but they have extra requirements here including proof of relations (found all the birth certificates), house deed (got it) and the hukou (grandma has lost it...) So I'm in a predicament.

I'm thinking of two options. Either go to Hong Kong just before it expires and apply for a new Q2 type (is that possible?) with the documents I have. OR try to apply for a tourist L type in Beijing, without traveling out of 'mainland China'.

Hoping to hear any suggestions - time is of the essence!! Will have to exit on Sunday

Shan, I advise you to first go to the local PSB and apply for a tourist L type. If the police accepts your application, you may need to submit a return ticket and an invitation letter from your grandma, but I'm not sure whether this would be successful. If the police does not accept the application, you can go to Hong Kong and apply for an L type or Q2 type there.

Ok thanks, I'll go there tomorrow to see if it's possible. If it's processed but then rejected and I need to leave for Hong Kong, will there be major consequences? Since I would then have overstayed my Q2. Would also have a rejected application presumably making the next application in Hong Kong more difficult ..

Also, I read elsewhere online that you can't change from one type to another when you are in mainland PRC. There's so much conflicting information, I'm quite confused! So since I'm on the Q2, some people have said I can only renew for Q2 in Beijing, can't swap over to a tourist, I need to exit first. Others say it should be fine. Hmmmmm... I will post about the outcome tomorrow
