About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

do I need a visa and where do I get it?

I am traveling from New York to Tokyo with a 15 hour layover in Beijing.

James, you needn't apply one in advance. You actually can make use of 72 hours free transit policy there. However, you should make sure that your flight doesn't stop by any other Chinese city.
