Overstay in mainland China with expiring passport

Can someone who has overstayed leave to Hong Kong? Need to renew a passport before leaving to another country, but all other countries in Asia require six months left on the passport. Dont want to be denied entry into HK to get a new passport because of an overstay in the mainland. Does this ever happen?

After you pay the fine for overstaying, you can leave. According to what I know, there is no six months passport validity for entering HK.
