What are the implications of a Z visa cancellelation and what is the best way to stay after?

I have handed in my notice to my employer. They are now threateneing cancellation of my Z type. What are the implications of this? Are they able to issue a release letter to avoid these implications? I also want to travel around China after what is the best way to do this to have the least negative implications?

Should I consider getting a tourist L type so I am always covered in case they cancel it?

Dear, your employer has the right to cancel your work permit and Z type. If you plan to travel in PRC after quiting the job and then go back to your country, you should also cancel your residence permit after Z type is cancelled. Meanwhile, you can apply for a tourist L type to travel.

If you don't render your passport, the employer cannot cancel your Residence Permit for work on your passport. What they can do is to cancel your Alien Employment Permit and report you to Public Security Bureau.

If you render your passport, your residence permit will be changed to an exit permit, which is normally 2 weeks (1 month is few. Sometimes even 1 week or 10 days). It cannot be extended. You have to go to HK or other country to get a NEW one.

Keep your residence permit, you have enough time to find a new job and do the paperwork for officially employment (to get a new Alien Employment Permit).

Of course, you'd better keep good relationship with the company. To change an employing company, you need to provide a release letter stamped and cancellation letter of Alien Employment Permit. In case you cannot get a release letter stamped and cancellation letter of Alien Employment Permit, some agent can help you out by paying some extra money.
