Hey, if you can't provide the invitation letter, then you should submit your hotel booking confirmation and round-trip air tickets. Yes, you can go to Chinese embassy/consulate between 15:00 and 17:00 on Tuesday and Thursday to make an appoinment in person. If the applicant can't come in person, he/she can assign someone else to make the appointment.
