do i have to take my luggage with me out of the airport

Question

I will be in Shanghai for 6 hours on a layover from Thailand to USA and plan to have a friend pick me up to have lunch.  Do I have to claim my luggage and take it with me? or can the luggage be checked through to my final destination?

Markus, if your flight tickets are bought from a same airline, then it's possible that you don't need to claim your luggage. If you hold seperate tickets from different airline, you may need to collect your luggage. You can double check this with the airlines.
