Australian applying for visa in England

I'm an Australian citizen and will be traveling in the UK prior to going to China. I will receive my invitation letter for F type via email. Can I apply in London Embassy as a tourist?
If so, what is my proof of legal stay? Just my passport with a stamp (as no is entry permit required)?

Kate, you can try to apply from the CVASC center in London. But I can't guarantee that you will get it for sure.
