About:Beijing Capital International Airport

checked in luggage during flight transfer

This will be my first connecting flight. Do I still need to claim and check in my luggage again when transferring to the connecting flight I have? Japan-Beijing (Air China) then BJ- Chicago (American Airlines).

According to your situation, it's International to International Transfer in T3 and it is a connecting flight. So you don't need to claim and recheck your luggage. The correct transfer procedures are Flight Arrival - Transfer Procedures - Border Inspection - Security Check - Custom Inspection.

Yes. During the layover, you can stay and take some rest in the special transfer area. Actually, you don't need to do the Border Inspection because of the layover is within 24 hours.
