do i need to check in for transit hotel?

I have a booked flight going to US with 11 hours layover(night) in PEK, how can I avail the free hotel they offer? do I need to check in online before the flight or I could just check in upon arriving to PEK? its my first connecting flight, do I still need to claim my baggage or the airline is the one responsible transferring my luggage to my next plane?
