West Peak cable car up and north peak cable car down on Mt. Huashan

Hi,

Planning to visit the mountain in mid December. From Xian take the train to Huashan (late morning), bus to town centre, bus to cable car West Peak to catch the sunset. Next morning, maybe sunrise in the East (I heard it can be watched from the North Peak), then cable car down.
Will the weather permit it as it can be very cold so early in the morning? Does it snow up there and will it be safe to hike then? How long will it take to hike from West to East peak or North Peak? Should I do West, East and then North peak -how long would that take?
Many thanks in advance for your advice!

I'd tell you the North Peak is on the middle of the mountain and it is absolutely not an ideal place to enjoy sunrise. Therefore, do go to East Peak!

You are right that it shall be very cold then and there will be snowfall on the mountain. The roads may be slippery, so it can be dangerous. If you insist in hiking, it is still doable. You need to wear skidproof boots, strong alpenstock and gloves with good friction (there are iron ropes for you to hold), as well as therminal clothing.

By hiking, it takes around an hour from the West Peak to East Peak. To North Peak, you need to spend 1.5-2h. And your plan for the peaks is good and the whole trip takes you 4-5h due to the road condition and cold weather.

Have a good trip!

thank you. I wonder if it's better to just go to the east peak and watch the sunrise (wonder if there will be others doing that or we're crazy). Will it be dark when we try to make it to the east peak? Can we get weather forecast whilst we are in the mountain overnight? Do they close the mountain if it snows? Just nervous about the safety of all. Thanks.

As u arrive Huashan late morning, I personally suggest you take a cable car to North Peak. Then hike onto East Peak in 3-4h. Just hold tight and prepare well. U will have a safe trip. Don't worry! In addition, the Plank Road/Walk on South Peak is a must-try if you are brave enough.

The mountain is open to the public all year around. Unless upon very heavy snowfall, it may be closed, but it seldom happen.

And signals are strong on the mountain, so you can surf the internet and read the weather forecast.
