i plan to travel by china eastern from kolkata to tokyo via kunmingshanghai.

Question

Total journey time is 16 hours . Do I need transit visa? If not, how can I use KMG-Shanghai sector in domestic airline and then re enter  at shanghai ? Same thing for return too.

No transit visa is needed. If staying in airports when transferring in the two cities, you don't need to present any documents. Just stay in the restricted areas. If you wish to have a short visit in both cities, go to the inspection counter of Changshui Airport and apply for a stay permit. With it, you are allowed to go into downtown areas.
