About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Am I eligible for 72 hour visa-free transit as a US citizen?

SFO -> Shanghai (with stopover in HKG) -> HKG -> SFO

Yes, your route is fine if your flight doesn't stop by any other cities in mainland China.

Is your stopover in HK on your flight from SFO to Shanghai?
If so, your flight route would be HK - Shanghai - HK and you´re not eligible for 72h transit.
