About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

2 hours in Shanghai

Hi, I'm transiting in Shanghai for less than 72 hours and have organised a couple of day tours. I think one goes outside the city boundary for a few hours, but I will be eating and sleeping at the same hotel in Shanghai while I am there. Is going briefly outside the city boundary a problem? Are there 'check point' checks on passports etc?

Hi, JL. The law forbids you to go out of the transit city, but someone actually did this before. As for your second question, I don’t think there are check points to check passports.

The only passport checks are when buying airplane and rail tickets. Nonetheless it is a legal requirement to carry your passport on your person.
