How can I get a Hong Kong residence permit? thank you

I am a 54 year old New Zealander who has started teaching in Guangdong, China last month. The school has successfully applied for a work permit for me from the local SAFEA office. Now they need to apply for an invitation letter from the foreign affairs office.

But the foreign affairs office want me to have a residents permit in Hong Kong so they can tell Hong Kong office to issue me the Z type.

Sharon, it's not easy to acquire Hong Kong residence permit. According to my knowledge, if you stay there for 7 years continuously. you can acquire permanent resident status. There is another type, which is issued to those who stay in HK more than 180 days. I am afraid that you can't get any type.

Therefore, you should take your work permit and get back to your own country to apply for the Z type.

Hi Tina, thank you for your reply. I am only seeking a temporary residence permit. Will that make it any easier? I currently have an F type.

Does anyone know if there any other possible solutions apart from returning home and applying there?

Thanks so much for your help :-)

Sharon, I don't think you can get the HK residence permit, even a temporary one. As you have an F type, you can try to change the F type to Z type directly within mainland at the local exit and entry administration office. The chance is half to half. Or you can find an agency to help you.
