Longest stay possible

I am planning to take a long vacation to China and visit family for 9-12 months if permitted. I am a naturalized citizen of US. What is the best way to be able to do this? I would like to travel at the end of Oct this year 2015.

Thanks and also please advise on how long the process could be applying for such visas.

Is there one type that can allow multiple entries on one entry permit for 12 months? (Planning to travel with family here and there once I am home to PRC)
