About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travelling from London to Shanghai via Hong Kong or Singapore

if I fly to Shanghai on an indirect flight via Hong Kong, then have 48 hours in Shanghai, fly back to Hong Kong for 24 hours before going back to London, can I qualify for the 72 hour visa free service?
Likewise if I did the trip via Singapore?
Thanks.

I'm afraid you do not qualify. You see, you fly from HK to Shanghai and then go back to HK. This route is actually not considered as a valid transit route.
