Arriving 7.00am on Sunday and departing 1.15pm on Wednesday

I will be arriving in Shanghai from Australia at 7.00 on Sunday morning and departing for Frankfurt at 1.15 on Wednesday afternoon - a total stay in Shanghai of approximately 78 hours. I will be staying with friends in Shanghai. I understand that I will not require a visa but that I will need to register with the local police station. Is that all that I need to do?

Craig, you just need to tell the airline that you want to use this policy in advance and apply for it at the port. After you go out of the airport, you should register at the local police station within 24 hours.
