Temperature in China during September - November?

I'll be in China from late September to mid/late October. Travelling from Beijing down to Hong Kong.
Is the general temperature range indicated in the information at the top correct? 10-22 Celsius?

I have been advised it gets quite hot the further south you go at that time of year so I'm a little confused..

There is nothing to be confused about. You are traveling down lines of longitude; from the upper reach of a temperate zone to a sub-tropical area, You have a similar situation along the east coast of Australia.
