About:Chinese Table Manners

What if you are allergic to something being served? How can you politely turn it down?

I am going to China for the New Year in 2016 for my first time. I speak a fair amount of Mandarin Chinese. I am allergic to alcohol of all things, and I know many places around the world celebrate with alcohol; I am assuming the Chinese New Year has this to some extent. What is the best way to politely turn down an alcoholic drink without offending your host?

Caitlin, you just need to tell the the truth that you are allergic to alcohol. They won't take it as offense. However, you can still drink juice, coke or Sprite to celebrate with them together. It doesn't matter what you drink. But you really need to celebrate together with them.
