Is it possible to do this in mainland or would I have to go back to the UK and re-apply there?

Radu, you can visit the entry and exit management bureau in the city where you live in and ask if you can extend your M type. Usually, the applicants are allowed to extend their stay once. But I am not sure if you can get another six months stay. It's up to the bureau.
