About:Kunming Attractions

I have 5 hrs layoff time in Kunming, from 5 am till 10am

Will it be realistically possible to visit the stone forest and back to the airport in that time with a private taxi ?

No, 5 hours is not enough for that. You need to be in the airport at least 2 hours before the next flight’s departure. The airport is about 55 miles from the stone forest. If hiring a private car, the driving duration would be 1.5 hours, let alone the time for sightseeing.
