Travelling to China with a previous Canadian criminal record

I have a criminal record and have previously been convicted of a criminal offence in Canada. Does this mean an automatic denial to travel to China for tourist purposes?

I don't think so. Having a previous criminal record may have some adverse impacts on your application, but it doesn't mean you have no chance to get the visa.
