About:China Tourist Visa

I'm planning to visit china one day when i go to Hong Kong.

I'm a British citizen but also got Hong Kong ID. The problem is do I have to have an invitation letter in order to apply for a visa since it will only be a day trip to shenzhen and i wouldn't be staying at any hotel? What if I don't have one?

you should apply the tourist type, just bring the round trip airtickets to HK to the consulate of China, and explain your itinerary to the officer, normally the officer will give you single entry valid for one month, and you can stay in mainland 1 day.
