About:Apply for China Visa in a Third Country

Work Permit / Z Visa will not renew because of age (>60)

I am US citizen and have lived in China for 10 years on Z type. However, I just learned a few weeks before expiration date that I cannot renew because I am over 60 (they seem to be enforcing this rule now). We have apartment her, own vehicle and basically all of life is here.

I live in Guangdong so it is easy to go to Hong Kong. What are my chances of getting the 10 year tourist type issued in Hong Kong under these circumstances? Is it best to just explain my situation and hope for the best? Any other suggestions?

Doug, I'm afraid you can't apply for the ten-year tourist type from Hong Kong. It's too difficult and you can't work with the tourist type. Actually, I know some persons who are elder than 60 years old and still working in China. Therefore, you can possibly renew your residence permit. By the way, if your wife is a Chinese citizen, you can apply for the permanent residency, so that you don't need to renew your residence permit again and again.
