Is it easy to travel to Shanglin county from Nanning during a day, three kids, two adults?

or would that be too far away to really see the beauty of it?

Yes, the transportation is convenient. The distance between these two places is about 63 miles.
You can take coach at Jinqiao Bus Station, get off at Shanglin County directly. The shedules are from 06:50 to 17:50 with the frequenct of 30 to 40 mins.
