About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a Chinese visa for my upcoming trip?

I am flying from seattle to Beijing and stay less than 72 hours, then transit to Hong Kong, after that, I will fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai and stay less than 72 hours, then I will departure shanghai for Seattle via Beijing International airport the same day, do I need to apply for a visa for this trip ? Please advise, I am holding a US passport. Thanks

Hi, Robert! On your way from Seatle to Beijing and then to Hong Kong, you can make use of the 72-hour free transit policy, so no entry permit is needed. On your way back, if you can limit your total layover time in Shanghai and Beijing to 24 hours, you don't need the entry permit too. If the layover time is more than 24 hours, you need to apply for a one-entry L or G type in advance.
