Cruise with one stop in China but Embassy staff insist on letter from a sponsor in China

We will be going on a cruise from Hong Kong with one stop in mainland. The staff at the Chinese Embassy in Doha says we need a letter from a Chinese sponsor with the sponsors ID before we can apply. We spoke to the Cruise liner and they said other embassies accept the travel itenary for cruise ships without a sponsor details. Please clarify and help

Hi George, as the officers requires you to submit a sponsor letter, you have no choice but to provide it. Otherwise, they will not issue you the transit visa. You can ask the cruise liner to help you to find a sponsor.
