Long layover at Beijing arriving late afternoon -- what to do?

I am arriving in the late afternoon and have a 12 hr layover. I would like to see something if at all possible, but I don't know how feasible it is. Initial thoughts were to visit either the Great Wall or Forbidden City, but by the time I get through the airport + transportation, these places will be closed.

Is there anything else I can do or see close to the airport later in the day?

Well, according to your arrival time, you don't have enough time to visit Great Wall and Forbidden City.
But there are also many attractive scenic spots in this city. Upon landing, you can take airport express to Dongzhimen, then change to other transport tools to where you want. You can visit Tiananmen Square, Wangfujing Avenue, National Stadium, National Aquatics Center and 798 Art Zone.
You can also easily find many nice local restaurants and taste some local foods, such as Roast Duck. :-)
