Do I need a residence permit for S1?

If i do need one, how do I go about applying for that? My husband is a student and the school will not be able to help with this. Will it be difficult to do this on my own?

Yes, you need to change your S1 into a resident permit. After you arrive in China, you should visit local entry and exit management bureau and change S1 into a resident pemit. Please do it as soon as possible because S1 is just valid for 30 days and it takes around 15 working days to deal with your matter.
