If I have two US passports, can I hold two Chinese visas?

I have two valid US passports. I have a valid Chinese Z type in one. Can I apply for a Chinese L type with my second passport? Or will doing so invalidate my Z (even though it is in a different passport book)?

If the information on both passport are exactly the same, I'm afraid applying for the L type will invalidate your Z type.
