Anne, you need to apply a recent bare-headed color photo on the application form. In addition, your passport, passport copy, and some other supporting documents are needed for the application.

The other documents are different based on your visit purpose. If you go there for leisure purpose, the documents shall be round-trip tickets and hotel booking records.

Hilary, thank you very much for your help. I've successfully applied for the single entry tourist type now, & had to produce all that you suggested. As Im going to visit my daughter who has just moved over there to work for a few months, I also needed an "invitation letter" from her with her full name & Shanghai address included, as well as all my passport details, flight in & out details, travel insurance details & who will be meeting all my expenses! Nothing's sacred! I used the website for my online application in Sydney. It says you must make an online appointment time, which I did, but you can just arrive , take a ticket & join the queue which is what you do even though you've made an appointment. It will take 3 days to be approved without being rushed through at extra expense. I haven't collected it yet,so I don't know how much an individual single entry tourist type costs yet.
I hope others find this information helpful.
