Authenticated US birth cert needed for Temporary Residence Permit?

I will be studying under an X1 visa, and was told I will need to take my birth cert with me and have it 'authenticated' by the Chinese consulate in NY first, is this true? Won't my passport be enough to apply for a residence permit?

Joanne, it's a bit strange. You shouldn't have been required to provide authenticated birth certificate. Are you a natural US citizen? I mean you weren't born in other countries and finally acquired your US citizenship?
