About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Definition of transit?

If I fly from the US to Shanghai, stay there for 36 hours and fly back to the US, does that count as transit as well or do I need to fly to a different country?
Thanks,
Marc

For the 72h TWOV you can´t go back to your departure country direct. You must leave China to a third country.
