Does It Matter If You Are Traveling on Two Separate Tickets?

I have an open jaw ticket from LAX to BKK, then from Beijing back to LAX via ICN. I will be getting a separate ticket to get to Beijing from BKK. My stay in Beijing will be less than 72 hours. Does it matter if your onward travel from Beijing is on a different ticket than the one that gets you to Beijing?
