About:China Visa on Arrival

i am a us citizen. can I travel to Shanghai and stay for 72 hrs, without a visa?

Larry, you can make use of 72 hours free transit in Shanghai as long as you meet the requirements. Confirmed onward air ticket and valid entry permit for the third destination are needed.
