About:Top 8 China Train Travel Tips You Should Know

From Xian to Beijing

My family and I would like to reserve a soft sleeper (we are 4 people) on 13 July approximately 19:30 hours traveling to Beijing. We think it is better to buy the tickets in advance and get them posted to our hotel in Xian. My Chinese friend told me that it is better to buy directly from the station 1 or 2 days before travel, because the times are often changed. Also, she told me that she sometimes reserved a seat or sleeper cabin, but other people were sitting there and refused to move away. She said there is no person to complain about these problems. It is a long journey and we have a child. What is your advice please?

The time may change, but not too often. For a July 13 trip, cannot be a big change. As she mentioned, if someone take your seat or bed, just show your ticket and get it back. If necessary, you can find railway staff for help. To avoid this problem, I suggest you to choose these Z types from Xian to Beijing. Xian will be the starting station, no delay, no worry for the occupied bed. Especially good for Z20, even no stop for the whole trip!

Thank you for your helpful advice. What are "Z types" and how can I choose this? Yes, my Chinese friend told me that sometimes they had the problem that people did not want to move from these seats that my friend and her family reserved, even when they showed their tickets, and there was nobody to ask. I think it will be ok though (I hope)!

I mean the Z44 and Z20 which start with "Z". Usually I think if you are travel from the first stop, the possibility of occupied beds are very small since all the people make the boarding the same time as you do.

Ah ok - thank you. Are these "Z" the high-speed (bullet) trains?

No, they are not the hi-speed kind. Hi-speed kind are started with "G", "D", "C" instead. But "Z" can be regarded as the fast type in noraml rails(K, T).
