Applying for chinese tourist type in hong kong, possible?

I am an American and going to HongKong to apply for a tourist visa. I was on a work type and in the middle of my contract I quit. Do I need a resident permit for HK when I apply? I've read stories of the consult telling people to return to their country. What are the documents that I need?

Carl, you are right, it's required that applicant should have HK residence permit if they apply from there, but some people can still get it. Perhaps you can have an agency to help you. BTW, are you in mainland now? If yes, I think you can convert your work type to an tourist type in the local exit and entry administration office so that you don't have to do the application in HK.
