how to pay hong kong bus?

Yesterday I came to HK for the first time. Found the bus station, queued up and got on the bus OK, but tried to pay the driver and he wouldn't take my money, luckily a kind woman paid using some kind of swipe card. Do I have to buy a special card?

I found the information already. I couldn't pay the fare because I didn't have the exact change, only 100HK and my fare was 40HK. You must have the exact fare. The kind lady that paid for me that used a swipe card must of used a card called an Octopus card.
