My residence permit expires on August 31. My current employer will not provide me the release letter until July 20 and at that point they will also submit the documents to cancel my foreign expert certificate (not my visa or residence permit). Then, my new employer wants me to go to Shenzhen to apply for a new foreign expert certificate and register with the police station there. Then, we have to schedule the police interview- I want to take a vacation and so asked if we could schedule the interview for the week of August 17 when I get back from my travels and also asked when is the latest day I could do the interview if my residence permit expires August 31? She said I HAVE to do the interview before August 10 and won't give me a reason why?? I don't understand why I can't just do the interview before my residence permit expires versus on some specific date that is so early in August?

Mar, your employer just wants to help you apply for the new work permit before your current resident permit expires. You know, it takes time to deal with your application for the work permit. Usually it needs 15 days. Besides, after you get your work permit, your employer still needs it to help apply for the new Z type. It also takes time, around 5 days. If you schedule the interview after August 17, then there isn't enough time for your new employer to acquire the work permit and new Z type. If you can't get the Z type before your current resident permit expires, then you need to exit mainland to apply for the Z type. It's more complicated. Personally, I think vacation isn't as important as your job and resident permit. You'd better follow your new employer's advice to acquire the work permit and then Z type first.
